Devotional Reading: “You know that afterward, when he wanted his father’s blessing, he was rejected. It was too late for repentance, even though he begged with bitter tears.” Hebrews 12:17 NLT

Esau’s story is that of a man who traded his destiny for fleeting pleasure. He sold his birthright, which included not only material benefits and family privileges but spiritual blessings as well, for a meal. The Bible says “he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way”. He didn’t give a second thought to what he had done. He did it, it felt good, and only much later did he come to regret it.

An important thing to know about making decisions is that your decisions will affect others, sometimes, even future generations. King David made a silly decision of sleeping with Bathsheba, wife of Uriah and the consequences of his decision were dire. Everything in his life, from 2 Samuel 11 to 1 Kings 2, was touched, affected, and coloured by that event. Moses could not enter the promised land due to an impulsive decision. If great men like Moses and David suffered immensely due to bad decisions, then we must be mindful of our decisions.

On the other hand, Solomon made a wise decision when the Lord appeared to him in 1 Kings 3:9. He asked for a wise and discerning heart to judge God’s people. The lord was so pleased with Solomon’s decision in choosing wisdom rather than the lives of his enemies, riches and long life that He resolved to give him his request and also the riches and honour he hadn’t requested for. This is clearly indicative of the fact that our choices and decisions matter to God.

What’s that decision that you want to take? Have you asked the right questions? Have you sought counsel from the right people? Have you prayed about it? Has the Holy Spirit given you the go-ahead? Ponder on these.

Prayer and Confession
Father, help me to trust you enough to guide me in making right decisions. Guide me to right men who counsel me as led by the Holy Spirit.
